On 22 January 2026, the XiA project launched its first open learning session.

Three guest speakers described what several European projects are doing when working on cybersecurity. Example projects include CYLCOMED, SECURED, and xShare.

Evangelos Markatos  who spoke at the European Digital Health Summit shared further insights on current cybersecurity threats from the perspective of the xShare project.

Session highlights

Privacy-preserving health data sharing

Juan Carlos Perez Baun (Eviden / Atos) presented concrete mechanisms to secure health data sharing, including data generated by connected medical devices. He drew on lessons learned from EU-funded projects called CYLCOMED and SECURED-EU. As key building blocks for trust, Juan’s presentation covered identity management, fine-grained access control, encryption, and anonymisation.

Cybersecurity challenges in the European Health Data Space (EHDS)

Evangelos Markatos (University of Crete / FORTH) explained how the EHDS “Yellow Button” has been developed in the xShare project. The button will facilitate health data sharing, while – however  – potentially increasing exposure to cyber threats. Evangelos emphasised the need for practical cybersecurity guidance  – as interoperability is scaled up  – for both citizens and organisations.

AI security in digital health

Kassem Kallas (INSERM) explored emerging artificial intelligence (AI)-specific risks, including backdoor attacks and model supply-chain vulnerabilities. Kassem explained why AI systems, when used in healthcare, must be secured by design with layered defences and a strong model provenance.
