DigitalHealthEurope – a coordination and support action – has provided comprehensive support to the Digital Health and Care Innovation initiative in the context of Europe’s Digital Single Market Strategy.

Digital Health Europe had three top priorities:

  • citizens’ secure access to and sharing of health data across borders
  • better data to advance research, disease prevention and personalised health and care
  • digital tools for citizen empowerment and person-centred care.

The project’s intention was to boost innovation and advance digital transformation of health and care related to the priorities of Europe’s Digital Single Market priorities. Indications of directions were available in the European Commission’s 2018 Communication. DigitalHealthEurope’s overall aim was to focus on actionable recommendations for a beyond 2020 vision of coordination and support to the European Union.

A collection of highly readable reports

A collection of 17 White Papers, guidelines, and policy papers has provided useful insights into potential policy directions in digital transformation of health and care from this year and beyond. They were created as a result of numerous workshops, consultations, and presentations being held alongside a final conference.

These are topics that remain of keen interest – in 2022 and beyond – to EHTEL.

Areas of interest for the EHTEL community

You’ll find plenty to interest you:

  • On data sharing among citizens, patients, healthcare professionals, and/or industry whether as consultations or eventual suggestions or recommendations.
  • On digital solutions to handle COVID-19 to offer general support to health and care and to support both the demand and supply sides of the market.
  • On technologies and infrastructures like the cloud and in fields like genomics.

Many of these materials provide natural counterparts to the outcomes of EHTEL’s 2021 Symposium. The Symposium videos are well worthwhile watching. (See Resources at end.)

A practical focus on exchanging knowledge

The project’s approach also involved a number of practical actions that included knowledge sharing, building multi-stakeholder platforms, and twinning activities. For instance, the results of 21 successful twinning applications are available.

DigitalHealthEurope’s website is rich with news, including through its seven issues of its Digest – launched in January 2021. A rich collection of 17 short reports help to understand future directions after 2020.
