A four-year European project will develop an AI-powered infrastructure linking digital twins of people, buildings and neighbourhoods to support better decisions in healthcare and environmental management.

AIGENTAIGENT, a new €10 million project funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe programme, kicked off on 12/13 October 2026 with the ambition of connecting digital twins across healthcare and the living environment.

The project will develop a Pan-European infrastructure that enables researchers, clinicians, housing professionals and policymakers to explore how health, buildings and environmental conditions influence one another. For example, users will be able to investigate how home renovations affect both energy consumption and health outcomes.

AIGENT will combine generative artificial intelligence, simulation models and distributed computing to enable cross-domain analyses while protecting sensitive data. Its no-code Scenario Studio will allow users to formulate questions in natural language and explore possible scenarios without having advanced programming skills.

The infrastructure will be tested through six pilot cases in Belgium, Finland and Greece. They will cover applications such as respiratory health, medication safety, building energy management, indoor environmental quality, and neighbourhood planning.

Over its four-year duration, AIGENT aims to move beyond isolated digital twin applications towards a reusable, interoperable and trustworthy European infrastructure, with real-world testing helping ensure that the technology meets users’ needs by 2030.

What’s in AIGENT for EHTEL members?

EHTEL has associated its work on AIGENT with Transforming Care Delivery, including the use of AI, a pillar in its annual work programme.

Over the next four years, EHTEL innovators and implementors will be looking to ask, and answer, such practical questions as:

  • What are the necessary data which need to be available and accessible to AIGENT?
  • What are the constraints for using a digital twin at, at least, two levels:
    • population level
    • individual level?
  • What are the conditions needed to make these uses sustainable?
